Promoting local innovation for Food and Nutrition Security in Africa

On 14–18 November 2016, a three-year international project called “Promoting local innovation for Food and Nutrition Security” (Proli-FaNS) Project was officially launched at a meeting of all partners in Accra, Ghana. The project contract is held and coordinated on behalf of the Prolinnova network by Association of Church-based Development Projects (ACDEP), the host organisation of Prolinnova-Ghana.

The project is being implemented from August 2016 to July 2019 in five African countries of the Prolinnova network, namely, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Kenya and Ghana, with funding from Misereor / Katholische Zentralstelle e.V. (Catholic Agency for Development Aid) in Germany through a grant of the “One World No Hunger” initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Proli–FaNS will support rural communities in these countries to develop their innovative capacities to improve food security, nutrition security and nutritional diversity so as to enhance community resilience to change. In doing so, Proli-FaNS will promote wider recognition of rural women as innovators and support them in further developing their innovations related to food and nutrition, and empower them to control the evolving benefits. In addition, the project will contribute to building Prolinnova multi-CPs in two sub-regions in West and Central Africa and in Eastern and Southern Africa. These will support the CPs in joint learning, mobilising resources and effective policy dialogue at national, sub-regional and regional (African) level to promote local innovation and research led by both female and male small-scale farmers.

Under the Ghana CP, Proli-FaNS is being implemented in two action-learning sites, namely, Bongo District in the Upper East Region and Yendi Municipality in the Northern Region, where previous Prolinnova initiatives were successfully implemented through collaboration with Navrongo-Bolga Catholic Diocesan Development Office (NABOCADO) and the Evangelical Presbyterian Development Agency (EPDRA-Yendi), respectively.

The International Support Team (IST) members in the Prolinnova International Secretariat in the Netherlands are backstopping the project.
