Presby Agric Station (PAS), Garu

Organisation Type:
Regional NGO
Description:
An organization working to agricultural advisory services to Garu-Tempane District and parts of the Bawku Municipal Assembly, Pusiga and Binduri Districts. The Garu Presbyterian Agricultural Station was established in 1967 by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana to work towards improving the living standards of the people in the area. It is the brain child of the first Dutch missionary Ghana, Rev C B Bot. The station was officially opened in April 1967 by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana and has since been engaged in providing agricultural advisory services and community development activities. The working area of the station covers almost the entire Garu-Tempane District and parts of the Bawku Municipal Assembly, Pusiga and Binduri Districts. Majority of the working population in the area (about 90%) are farmers. However, in view of the unreliable rainfall pattern and the low soil fertility in the area, yields are very low. The people also engage in off-farm activities such as agro-processing, pottery, dry season gardening, petty trading, black smithing, farm produce and livestock marketing, etc. The Station is under the leadership of a seven-member Management Board that is responsible for policy formulation and direction of the all the Church’s four agricultural stations in Northern Ghana. There is also an Advisory Board made up of the Manager, Heads of the various units, The District Minister, the MoFA Director, the Chairperson of the Social Services Sub Committee of the Garu-Tempane District Assembly and a farmer representative. The AB is responsible for reviewing management plans, the implementation of such plans; reports of progress and provides technical advice for the smooth running of the station.
